UHMP Community Health Storytelling ‘Bootcamp’ Application
We are now accepting applications for our Community Health Journalism Bootcamp!
Youthcast Media Group®’s new journalism training opportunity is an introductory-level “bootcamp” on community health storytelling for promising writers without journalism experience.
We are looking for a small group of 8-10 diverse high school students who are talented writers, are interested in learning more about journalism, and are passionate about their communities. Experience with news writing is a plus, but is not required: we’ll teach all the basics and students will each produce a 250-word news story with the help of our staff. Students who successfully complete the bootcamp will receive a $100 stipend.
From June 28 to July 10, students will attend six 90-minute workshop sessions via Zoom. They’ll learn from current and former journalists and interview health experts about the issues affecting their own neighborhoods and communities. Their work will be published on UHMP’s website and offered to one or more local or national digital and print publications. We are partnering with several, including The DC Line and The Washington Informer, Black-owned newspapers and the Washington Blade for our LGBTQ+ health content.
